FAQ: Should We Send Americans Into Missions?
As we have toured America talking about missions we hear various objections. We have tried to cover some of those objections in our FAQ Page. But I ran across a blog on thegospelcoalition.org by Ben Stevens that answers these 7 common objections to long-term missions: “It (long-term missions) destroys foreign cultures.” “It’s based on outdated theology.” “It’s unnecessarily offensive.” “Short-term teams can do the same thing but more efficiently.” “It’s much more effective to just fund foreign nationals.” “It distracts from the needs of our own nation.” “Because people have immigrated to America’s cities, it would be more cost-effective and…
General Update on the Hare Family
Stacey is fast on the track of completing linguistics training. She is half way through her third session and will be done with school at the beginning of March. She is currently taking Phonology and Grammar which she could not find more exciting. There are few things that delight her soul like being handed a sheet of data from a language and being told to organize it and find patterns. Such nerdy pleasures have reaffirmed to us that she is called to be a Bible translator. And it makes me love her all the more! She really enjoys her professor…
Have You Ever Praised God for Languages?
Have you ever thought to praise God for his power in creating the world’s languages? There are currently around 6,900 languages in the world today. Some languages have evolved and borrowed from other languages so that if you were to listen closely you could pickup a word here or there. Other languages are so different from English that at best you could ignorantly nod your head and pray that the people talking in front of you are not making fun of you. And no matter how similar the language, it is almost impossible to acquire a new language without an…
How Heaven Motivates Missions
I am so thankful for my Dad. I have never met anyone who believes with as much assurance and zeal that Christ could return tomorrow than him. Heaven and the return of Christ comes up in almost every one of our conversations. I can remember as a young girl that my Dad told me that if he were to die, he would want his funeral to be a party with lots of balloons and that he would want me to wear bright, cheery clothes–all because he would want me to celebrate the fact that he was in Heaven. And these…
Thinking Through Self Defense
You may have heard of Jim Elliot, Nate Saint, Ed McCully, Peter Fleming, and Roger Youderian. They are the American missionaries that were killed while seeking to bring the Gospel to Huaorani tribe in Ecuador. These men went out to a tribe in the rain forest that was known for violence because they loved them and wanted them to know the Gospel. Due to a lie that was told about them, the tribe came to their makeshift camp and speared them to death in 1956. At the time, these murders were so big that the magazine Life did a spread…
You think English is Easy?
Most times when we talk to people about our plans they say that they think it is pretty intense that we will have to learn two more languages. After reading the email I got below, I figure if we can learn English we can probably learn anything! Hope you enjoy this as much as I do.——————————————————— You think English is easy?? 1) The bandage was wound around the wound. 2) The farm was used to produce produce. 3) The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse. 4) We must polish the Polish furniture. 5) He could…
FAQ: Is the Bible Reliable?
by Dave I have had this conversation perhaps a million times: Me: [talking about the Gospel] The Bible says… Person: Well, you know that the Bible has been corrupted. Me: Oh it has? Person: Yes, it has been around for thousands of years and has been tampered with by men throughout the years. Who knows what it said originally? Me: Okay. So, what parts have been tampered with? Person: Excuse me? Me: If the Bible has been corrupted and the earliest manuscripts are so different, what parts have been corrupted? Person: … Perhaps you have been on one side of…
Memorial Services and Birthdays
We just got back to Texas after a roller coaster ride to Colorado and back. We drove up to Colorado Springs on Wednesday (it takes us about 14 hours). Thursday was the memorial service for Heather. Saturday was my birthday (30 years young). Then on Sunday we drove back to Dallas. It was really draining partly because of all the driving and no doubt also because of the grief. It was difficult to be back in Colorado and not have Heather there. But in the midst of it God was kind. It was encouraging to be around my family and…
A Loss of Joy – The Death of My Sister
It is amazing in the time that we have started this blog we have already written twice of death that has impacted us. But here I am again. This time the Lord has chosen to bring my sister Heather to himself. If you have never met her, my lovely sister Heather Joy Hare was born in 1978. She was born with Down Syndrome which was no doubt a shock to my parents as she is their first child. I came around four years later and by that time, Heather had already received open heart surgery. Even as a newborn, the Lord…
More Quirky Happenings in the Hare Home
Stacey said my blogs have been a bit heavy recently, so I thought I would go for something light. Here are some more quirky happenings in the Hare home:Kyra has asked to translate the Bible with us, Kaden has made it clear he does not want to help. Twice recently two separate children have pointed to pictures of African American men and thought it was a picture of me. Makyra says at least twice a day, “Daddy I like Oleg and Chad.” Oleg is her uncle and Chad is Chad Armstrong, a college buddy of mine that lived in Dallas…
