See you Later; in Honor of my College Roommate as she Heads to West Africa

My freshman year of college, I walked into my dorm kind of nervous and afraid, but fortunately there was a kind girl named Lisa Voth that lived a couple doors down from me.  She was quirky, full of life, and welcoming and thus we became friends quickly.   The next year, we went to Israel through a program at our college and were roommates.  I was struggling in my classes because I did not know much of anything about the Old Testament coming into the program.  However, Lisa was very patient with me and time and time again explained about how…

Lessons Learned in Tone Class

Tone languages are a result of the Fall.  When missionaries go to the field and determine their languages are tone languages, some seriously doubt their calling to the field.  – Various GIAL  professors. So, I just finished an 8 week class called Tonal Analysis and I would like to explain it but I find it a little hard to do so.  Here is my attempt:  Some languages use vowels and consonants to construct words (like English) while others use vowels, consonants, and tone to construct words (like Mandarin).  Whether a pitch is high or low in some languages is as…

Does our Justification Lead to Inaction? Part 1 of 3

Thankfully, very few Christians today would say that the doctrine of justification[1]gives us permission to sin.  This lie definitely has been used by the Devil to derail many believers, but I am not so sure that this is his lie of choice in evangelical churches today.  Instead, I am concerned that we emphasize so much that Christians are not saved by good works that we are suspicious of “good works” altogether.  A common refrain in American churches is that we need to “preach the Gospel to ourselves every day.”  When inquiring among our brothers and sisters about a career choice, we…

How Heaven Motivates Missions

I am so thankful for my Dad.  I have never met anyone who believes with as much assurance and zeal that Christ could return tomorrow than him.  Heaven and the return of Christ comes up in almost every one of our conversations.  I can remember as a young girl that my Dad told me that if he were to die, he would want his funeral to be a party with lots of balloons and that he would want me to wear bright, cheery clothes–all because he would want me to celebrate the fact that he was in Heaven. And these…

The Life we were Supposed to Have…Not Worth Comparing to Future Glory

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. – Romans 8:18   We arrived home safe and sound from California a couple days ago and while we were there we could not help thinking life in California was the life we were supped to have.  A few of the friends we spent time with were friends that I have had since kindergarten.  Several of my relationships were from high school and then in Southern California we spent time with people we knew in college.  We…

California Goodbyes!

We have been grateful to see so many people on our final California trip. Of course, we only remembered to get pictures with a few. It has been a joy and a sorrow to see everyone and have to say ‘goodbye’. OK, everybody look at the camera! Mimi and Elias chillin’ in the pool. Papa and Kaden. Gorgeous view in Kevin’s backyard, and the scenery behind Stacey is pretty too! Kaden’s Cheese Face. Stacey and I fell in love during Dr. Halstead’s Greek class. We are very grateful for this man! Stacey, Meredith Ebner and lots of kids! Dave and…

11 Ways to Deaden your Desire for Missions

Maybe you have listened to a sermon or a missionary appeal and you have thought to yourself, “I am there!  I am going to that unreached people group!”  After church, you get in your car and have lunch with friends, then you go home and do some yard-work.  Monday morning rolls around and you drag yourself out of bed, sit in a colorless cubicle for 8 hours, come home to more work, and then repeat this cycle day in and day out.  Come Friday afternoon, your once-passionate-heart for missions is as dry as a bone.  You do not feel much…
