So Encouraged by Her Choice to Suffer

“Love does not seek its own.” I Corinthians 13:4
Many of you may have already seen this video and multiple blog posts on the web, but I could not help but to devote a post to a wonderful couple, Ian and Larissa Murphy.  Their story has been on my mind for days and their example has convicted me in many ways.  Please take a minute to watch this moving video:

Her Choice to Suffer
What I find so amazing is that he did not choose to suffer, but she had a choice.  He did not choose to get into a car accident and have a life filled with grief, but she could have chosen otherwise.  So she had the choice to live a “normal” life not characterized by disability but she rejected it and chose instead to live a hard life.

This kind of love could onlybe explained by Jesus living inside of her because the choice to suffer is so incredibly contrary to human nature.  It can only be understood in light of Christ’s choosing to leave Heaven to experience pain out of love for the sick and sinful.  The precedent to choose to suffer for the sake of love is set by Christ on the cross for all followers of Jesus.  And her choice to give herself to love at such personal cost reminds me that Christ saves us for the purpose of not just being loved by Him, but also to love like Him.  What a weighty and beautiful calling.

Mere Speculation
What rewards will the Lord give to Larissa for her sacrificial love towards Ian?  I speculate that the Lord will resurrect Ian’s body, give him strong arms and strong legs for the purpose of serving Larissa in Heaven forever.  I speculate that he will delight to serve her as a “thank you” for her life of loving service toward him.  She will look back and see the Lord sustaining her through a difficult life and worship him as she continues to serve Ian.  And she will know deep in her soul that it was all worth it.  And Jesus will be there and he will be glorified for enabling two sinful people to love like he first loved them.  Their story will certainly be one that saints in Heaven will never tire of hearing!

“Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates
his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.”
John 12:25
